Lobbying can often take less traditional forms. For example, although it went largely undetected, it was lobbying that helped to ban deep-sea trawling in Europe. In November 2013, illustrator Pénélope Bagieu published “take five minutes and sign, mate”, an illustrated plea in the form of a comic strip calling for a ban on deep-sea fishing. The cartoon invited people to sign a petition by directly accusing French supermarket chain Intermarché of being to blame. The comic went viral in just a few days and the whole industry eventually gave in to consumer pressure. On 2 December, fellow supermarket Casino removed deep-water fishing products from their shelves, followed by Carrefour and finally Auchan. Intermarché followed suit in late December. An agreement was finally concluded in 2016 – there would be no more deep-sea fishing within the European Union.
