The Sims was originally designed as a game about architecture and urban design. The premise was simple: players had to build a house then launch a “life simulation” where their characters would react to the layout and look of what they’d created. A bit like a BIM simulation, but with humans. But very quickly, the creator of The Sims realised that the characters could be much more interesting than the houses themselves. It took him a few years to convince the game’s producers, but between 2000 and 2001, over 6 million copies of the first instalment in the series were sold!
