As they strike the desk with their gavel, their calls of “going... going... gone!” ring throughout the room. Works of art, everyday objects, furniture – even livestock! –, auctioneers take charge of selling a whole range of different goods at auction.
Fun fact
Ever noticed how auctioneers sometimes speak “a bit” fast? Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet! The World Livestock Auctioneer Championship was first held in the United States in 1963 and celebrates what Americans refer to as the “auction chant”. Typical of the United States and Canada, this way of speaking – extremely fast and rather haunting – allows auctioneers to call out bids and prices at almost hallucinating speed.
