They wanted it, they got it, they... ignored it? In November 2017, following endless requests from users, Twitter announced it would increase the character limit per tweet from 140 to 280. After a year of monitoring tweets, the stats showed users weren’t massively taking advantage of the extra room to express their thoughts: just 12% of tweets exceeded 140 characters, while the average length of a tweet actually decreased from 34 to 33 characters.
