In 2016, the Panama Papers scandal broke, confirming to the world that, every year, dozens of countries lose billions through tax evasion. The affair hit the headlines following the leak of millions of confidential documents from files belonging to a company called Mossack Fonseca in Panama. The documents – handed over to a German newspaper by an anonymous source – constituted the largest leak in the history of journalism. Newsrooms and journalists from all over the world joined forces to work on the project together, and the scale of it was daunting. They had to rebuild and work with a database of 11.5 million documents! This titanic effort helped to incriminate a large number of personalities in the financial scandal, from politicians and royalty to celebrities, top athletes, banks and criminals.
