Carried out in the United States in 2016, the Good Hair Survey revealed that one in five black women feel social pressure to straighten their hair for work. Indeed, they think their natural hair – whether they wear it in braids or just as it comes – would be perceived as “less professional” than straight hair. This issue has been at the heart of debate in Western countries for a number of years now, so much so that California actually outlawed “capillary discrimination” in a vote in 2019.
