The World Police and Fire Games were launched in 1985 and take place every two years. They’re a kind of specialist Olympics, reserved solely for the police, firefighters and other emergency services. Alongside typical disciplines, participants also compete in events specific to their profession, such as the Ultimate Firefighter Championship. To win, you have to run up 62 flights of stairs and hoist a hose up a ladder while carrying a dummy... The games are the third biggest sporting competition in the world in terms of athlete numbers alone, just beaten by the Olympic Games and the Military World Games.
