In Europe, the idea of social housing really took off during the industrial revolution, with the construction of housing for factory workers. In Britain, the entire town of Bournville was built by the chocolate factory-owning Cadbury family to house their employees. Offering them an escape from the overcrowded slums of the inner city, cleaner, healthier and happier workers living in far better conditions meant more profit for the chocolate factory: win-win!
