Do you know how the Red Cross was founded? It all started with a Swiss businessman called Henry Dunant. Shocked by the human cost at the Battle of Solferino in 1859, he offered some improvised medical care on the spot with the help of some local people, treating the wounded from both sides of the conflict without fear or favour. In 1863, he became a pioneer by taking part in the Geneva Convention, which saw the foundation of the International Committee of the Red Cross. It would prove to be the foundation of international humanitarian aid as we know it.
