Original idea for a first name: ever heard of Phenarete? Probably not. Mainly known for being the mother of the philosopher Socrates, she was actually a midwife by trade. Socrates spoke about her in one of his philosophical proclamations, comparing his science to his mother’s – while she helped bodies give birth, he helped minds give birth... Socrates’ philosophy was called maieutics, which literally means obstetrics in Greek, but philosophically relates to drawing out learning by asking questions. Even today, midwives are occasionally referred to as maieuticians!
