Oenologist

The word oenologist comes from the Ancient Greek for wine, oînos, plus the suffix -ology, meaning the study of something. They’re the people who oversee and coordinate wine production and guarantee its quality.

Fun fact

In 2018, the world’s biggest consumer of wine annually per capita was... the Vatican! At 74 litres per head, they were almost twice as sozzled as France, a nation famously full of wine lovers. It should be said that the per capita statistic is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, given the city-state has less than a thousand permanent residents but lots of thirsty tourists... Throw in the need for communion wine and the low taxes imposed on alcohol and, well, it’s not really that surprising after all... Or is it?
