Palaeontology and the study of prehistoric times began in the 19th century. Before then, depending on where they were found in the world, dinosaur bones were usually thought to be the remains of dragons or else the skeletons of giants! Similarly, the legend of Cyclops can be explained by the discovery of prehistoric skulls belonging to dwarf elephants in Greece, Crete and Sicily.
