It’s not just architects and roofers who decide the shape and colour of our roofs, but also the climate. The slope of a roof changes depending on the region. In areas with lots of heavy rain or snow, steeply pitched roofs are the norm, but in more southerly regions with nicer weather, roofs are usually more gently sloped. Typically painted white in warmer places, they’re often part of “cool roofing” projects in hot countries in the fight against global warming: painting a roof white can lower the inside temperature of a building by almost seven degrees.
