Job description 

Auditors review the financial records and operations of companies and verify that they’re accurate and in compliance with tax law. They make sure an organisation’s funds are properly accounted for by examining various elements of the company and take meticulous notes on all the aspects involved, which is called an audit trail. Even though they’re hired by the companies they’re examining, auditors are independent auditing experts bound by a strict code of ethics. This kind of auditor is known as an internal auditor. Their tasks involve: 

  • Traveling to client sites to meet clients, their staff and to obtain information and documents required for their evaluation 
  • Advising clients on financial and accounting matters relating to auditing, including areas for improvement 
  • Preparing reports on problematic findings 
  • Meeting with clients to gain an understanding of their business and to present findings following the audit process

Qualifications 

There are multiple routes into auditing. Those with a degree in a relevant subject such as accountancy, computing, business or economics can join a firm as a trainee or as part of a graduate scheme. Apprenticeships at a company and training courses with professional bodies are open to those without a (relevant) degree. Apprenticeships and graduate programmes usually involve taking a higher-level qualification in auditing. 

Salary and earning potential 

Salaries in this profession can vary significantly depending on location, experience and employer. Auditor jobs at the top accounting firms can pay particularly well. Auditors can expect between £20,000 and £35,000 at the beginning of their careers. With between three and seven years of experience, salary prospects can rise to as much as £53,000. The average auditor salary is around £36,000. Senior auditors with managerial or directorial responsibilities can earn up to £70,000.
