Welcome to the world of consulting! Here's the job description for a junior consultant

Let's get one thing straight up front: not every consultant job is the same. Aside from the various areas consultants can focus on, there's another distinction that can be made: in-house vs. external. As an in-house consultant, you take on project-related tasks within your company. If you work for an external consultancy service provider, you'll usually work for many different clients.

But the methodology of the way you work is identical. It's about taking an objective view of the area you're consulting on. This means considering all the influencing factors involved in a balanced and unbiased way. Consultants also provide special expertise about the industry they specialise in and their competitors. Based on the existing situation, consultants develop strategies for achieving the desired result.

What does a consultant do?

  • Collecting data for the analysis of processes and problem areas
  • Developing solutions in cooperation with the consulting team and client company representatives
  • Organising meetings and documenting results
  • Preparing status reports and documents to support decision-making
  • Interim and final presentations to decision-makers

In some areas of consulting, it's also common for the consulting firm to be present during the implementation phase. This is to achieve a more long-term impact of the measures taken.

Fun fact

Being a consultant can open many doors. The two founders of JobTeaser (that’s us!) met when they were both working for a big management and strategy firm, with neither having really asked themselves what they wanted to do in life. Realising they were just drifting along, together they changed course and set themselves a challenge: to help students and recent graduates unlock their full potential and find their way in life. It just goes to show, sometimes solving other people’s problems can help you, too!

What skills does a consultant need?

Consultancy services often still take place directly at the client's place of work. This means that, as a consultant, you need to be prepared to travel to visit the client on a regular basis. How often do you have to travel and what distances? That depends entirely on the focus of your consultancy services and your employer. For example, while many IT consulting firms with long-term projects aim to have consultants working with more local clients, other employers don't work this way.

Broad spectrum: training for the consulting industry

Consulting has the reputation of being a particularly challenging area to work in. The idea people have about the profession is mainly shaped by international management consultancies. But not every consultant prepares top management decisions for corporate strategy. As a consultant, you can advise people and companies in many different areas:

  • Public relations
  • Tax law
  • IT
  • HR
  • Engineering
  • Management

This makes it impossible to lump all consultant qualifications and training together. For example, if you want to work as an IT consultant, you usually need a degree in computer science, information systems or the natural sciences. But it's also possible to get into it via an apprenticeship or by switching from another career path provided you have the appropriate IT skills.

Consultant salary

A career as a consultant is characterised by two main elements: a high level of motivation and rapid development of skills. Those who prove themselves in project work can progress quickly. At the beginning, your salary as a junior consultant will range from £30,000 to £44,000.

At JobTeaser you can find lots of jobs in the field of consulting. Work as a well-paid consultant in London or apply to be a consultant in Birmingham, for example.
