Welcome to the world of consulting! Here's the job description for a junior consultant
Let's get one thing straight up front: not every consultant job is the same. Aside from the various areas consultants can focus on, there's another distinction that can be made: in-house vs. external. As an in-house consultant, you take on project-related tasks within your company. If you work for an external consultancy service provider, you'll usually work for many different clients.
But the methodology of the way you work is identical. It's about taking an objective view of the area you're consulting on. This means considering all the influencing factors involved in a balanced and unbiased way. Consultants also provide special expertise about the industry they specialise in and their competitors. Based on the existing situation, consultants develop strategies for achieving the desired result.
What does a consultant do?
- Collecting data for the analysis of processes and problem areas
- Developing solutions in cooperation with the consulting team and client company representatives
- Organising meetings and documenting results
- Preparing status reports and documents to support decision-making
- Interim and final presentations to decision-makers
In some areas of consulting, it's also common for the consulting firm to be present during the implementation phase. This is to achieve a more long-term impact of the measures taken.
