Ever heard of sabermetrics? In 2002, Oakland Athletics baseball team had its best players poached by a rival team. To rebuild an effective team but at a lower cost, coaching staff assessed available players based on new in-house performance indicators known as sabermetrics. The result? These new “lower-rated” but talented players won 20 games in a row. The following year, the Boston Red Sox started copying their techniques and ended up winning the league. The story of this statistical approach to sport is told in the book and film Moneyball.
