Did you know that in Europe from the 13th-18th century, animals could be convicted and sentenced just like humans? While it’s an animal’s owner who takes responsibility these days, in the Middle Ages, animal trials were taken very seriously indeed! 90% of animals brought to justice at the time were pigs. They roamed freely and caused a lot of accidents, from ruining gardens and destroying shops to tipping newborns out of their prams – who they would sometimes then try to eat. Ouch! This all culminated in a Normandy sow being sentenced in 1386 to being dragged through the streets of Falaise before being hanged and burned.
