We’ve all heard the stories about demanding celebrities over the years. From Elton John wanting freshly-cut flowers in his dressing room to Jean Dujardin, the French actor and comedian whose contract for the film Cash stipulated that “no member of the technical or artistic team should be treated better” than him... But – sometimes – there’s a very good reason for including strange clauses and requests in contracts. For instance, in the 1970s, clause 126 of Van Halen’s contracts famously stipulated there must be a bowl of M&Ms provided without any brown ones. The reason? Just to check someone had actually read the contract properly. If there were any brown M&Ms in the bowl, the band would have to check all their technical equipment for safety reasons.
