    Hallo, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier!

An integrated district and a new place for Hamburg Today, we are proud to celebrate the retail opening of our latest retail-anchored, mixed-use destination, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. Part of one of the largest and most ambitious urban regeneration projects in Europe, HafenCity, the programme blends a diverse retail, dining and entertainment offering with homes, offices, hotels and even a cruise ship terminal – bringing new economic, social and environmental benefits to the city of Hamburg and the local community. Built on a former industrial site, the project is designed as an integrated district with extensive connections to the city’s public transportation network, encapsulating URW’s commitment to partner with major cities on urban regeneration projects which support their environmental transition. Linking future-oriented models for urban living with the historically developed Hamburg identity, it connects places to live and work with innovative retail concepts, as well as attractive cultural and leisure offers, all within a five-minute walk. Curating the ultimate experience The new district has been meticulously realised to offer visitors the most exciting experience, reflecting the finest contemporary lifestyle trends. Featuring everything from global brands to local heroes, the destination includes state-of-the art stores, such as German department store Breuninger, H&M, Mango, Thalia and one of the largest Zara flagships in Germany. National players and local champions enliven the retail offer, as do the 40+ dining options, the premium multiplex Kinopolis cinema, with the city’s first Dolby Cinema auditorium, and family-friendly attractions such as the first LEGO Discovery Centre in northern Germany and the Port des Lumières immersive art centre. Retail, dining and entertainment areas are surrounded by elegant offices with contemporary designs, spread over multiple buildings and offering 4,000 workplaces upon full delivery. Three further buildings contain 579 residential apartments, while the district’s three hotels operated by Accor will ultimately offer over 800 rooms, all located near the brand-new cruise terminal. A sustainable new landmark in Germany’s northern metropolis In line with URW’s Better Places commitments, the project was designed with a clear focus on sustainability. Ninety percent of the concrete used in construction was low carbon, saving 23,800 tonnes of CO2, and the project avoids the artificialisation of around 8,000 m² of natural and agricultural land. Built on the site of a former gasworks, the development enhances local biodiversity, transforming a contaminated area with diverse flora and fauna. It is also designed to be a hub for sustainable mobility, linking two bus lines and a metro station, and offering space to park around 3,500 bicycles. The quarter has been awarded the BREEAM Communities certificate – the first of its kind in Germany – with an “Excellent” rating, recognising the project’s significant environmental and social contributions. Celebrating Hamburg’s new district Today’s inauguration kicks off a multi-week celebration that includes a series of “Discovery Days”, where visitors are invited to explore the different experiences available at Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, encompassing culture, arts, food, sustainability, lifestyle and technology. Later this summer, on June 21, the centre will kick off the music festival season in Hamburg with an exclusive live concert from pop star Rita Ora.

Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier: A destination with sustainability at its core

Part of one of the most ambitious urban regeneration projects in Europe, HafenCity, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier exemplifies URW’s committed approach to sustainable development and social impact, while partnering with cities on their environmental transition. Built on a former industrial site, the project highlights the Group’s dedication not just to building a destination, but to creating a lasting district for the city of Hamburg. With a clear commitment to sustainability, this programme effectively combines cutting-edge design with a focus on the well-being of the local community, creating jobs and reshaping the urban landscape for a positive, long-term impact. A testament to this commitment, the project has earned both the BREEAM Communities and BREEAM New Construction "Excellent" certificates, marking it as a beacon of sustainable urban development in Germany. Building and operating with energy and resources top of mind At the core of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier’s sustainability efforts lies its impressive energy performance and resource-conscious construction techniques. The project remediated nearly 1 million tonnes of polluted soil, turning a former gasworks site into a thriving urban oasis. In addition, 90% of the cement used in its construction is low carbon, which resulted in savings of 23,800 tonnes of CO2. Each building has been designed to minimise energy consumption, heating and cooling, with LED lighting installed in all common areas and 100% of electricity provided by renewable energy. All timber used for the development was sustainably sourced, and recycled steel was incorporated as concrete reinforcement, further reducing carbon emissions. Throughout the planning and construction, rigorous attention was paid to preserving and enhancing biodiversity. Green spaces and wildlife-friendly areas pepper the new district, as well as green roofs and vertical gardens that support bee and bird populations. Fostering social and community impact Beyond environmental targets, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier was specifically designed to have a positive social impact on its surrounding communities. The development creates 4,000 jobs in the retail, restaurants and hotel sectors (which, when combined with its 4,000 office workers and 2,000 residents, means that 10,000 people will live and work in the district). The development offers a sustainable mobility approach through connections to public transport, including its own metro station and bus lines, as well as the provision of around 3,500 bicycle parking spaces. This reduces the need for private vehicle usage, effectively lowering transportation emissions by an estimated 8,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The new district also emphasises inclusivity and accessibility, welcoming people of all ages and abilities. By partnering with local institutions, URW has committed to supporting educational initiatives and social projects that foster a strong sense of community engagement. This collaborative approach has already involved residents through neighbourhood events and stakeholder meetings, ensuring the voices of those in the community were heard throughout the development. Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is a clear statement about what is possible in sustainable urban regeneration, and how partnerships can revitalise communities, nurture local economies and foster more sustainable cities. The environmental and social measures that are part of the new quarter’s design align well with URW’s Better Places sustainability commitments, which set out the Group’s ambition to be a net zero company on scopes 1 and 2 by 2030, and net zero across all scopes by 2050.

    Making an impact together

At URW, we put people at the heart of what we do, and we’re committed to having a positive impact on the communities everywhere we operate. So, each spring, as part of our Community Days initiative, our staff volunteer their time to a huge range of good causes. From improving environmental ecosystems to further enabling local employment, supporting vulnerable populations and providing access to educational and cultural activities, our teams’ contributions fostered positive change, showcasing our dedication to thriving communities.     Here are some of the projects that we participated in for our 2024 Community Days.   In our Southern Europe region, French staff took part in an Impact Odyssey, addressing over 1,000 social and environmental challenges. Their collective efforts led to 20 outreach sessions with the homeless, the collection of 85 hygiene kits for those in need and contributions to a species census. In Spain, the teams worked with Fundación A La Par to organise a horse-riding event for local people living with disabilities. In Northern Europe, the team in Sweden collaborated with Solna Stad and the United Soul association, to prepare the Blue Hill Block Party, a community event in a disadvantaged suburb. More than 3,500 locals attended the party, helping to build social cohesion. In Denmark, our teams partnered with Folkebevægelsen mod Ensomhed and Salling Group to host a talk on the impact of loneliness and a convivial 6 km neighbourhood walk. Volunteers in the Netherlands worked at a local food bank, improved a garden at a youth institution and built beehives on the roof of the Amstelveen shopping centre to support urban biodiversity. In Central Europe, part of our German team worked with the Rhine Clean up initiative to combat river and ocean pollution while others partnered with Tafel Oberhausen, an NGO that provides affordable food to 3,000 disadvantages individuals each week. In Poland, volunteers renovated a shelter for homeless women and a psychiatric day-rehabilitation unit, and in Austria staff members worked with Samariter Suppentopf to cook for those in need. Volunteers in the Czech Republic beautified a centre for the visually impaired and Chodov Senior's House, and teams in Slovakia worked with the DePaul charity to prepare meals for the homeless. At Westfield Stratford City in the UK, volunteers with The Felix Project distributed meals across Stratford, with a focus on Newham's high child poverty rates. Westfield London hosted an after-school session for young people at WEST Youth Zone and our Croydon volunteers supported the Legacy Youth Zone with activities including a football match, craft and T-shirt design and dance sessions. The UK team also sponsored the Cut It Out Community Football Tournament, designed to raise awareness about knife crime. Activities in the US saw volunteers partnering with Baby2Baby to sort and package essential items such as clothing, hygiene products and toys to support families in need. Other teams worked at the Los Angeles LGBT Center, which provides services to over 35,000 members of the LGBTQ community.   The URW Community Days are a chance for our teams to give back to their communities and work at the frontline, where services are needed most. But community initiatives and volunteering go on throughout the year at URW, delivering on our commitment to act responsibly as agents of positive change wherever we do business.   In addition to involving all our employees in meaningful volunteering programmes, we’ve also committed to supporting 15,000 people annually through training, social inclusion and employment opportunities. With detailed Community Resilience Action Plans, our asset teams are focused throughout the year on achieving this target.   Learn more about our commitment to building thriving communities.

URW AWARDED ‘A’ RATING BY CDP FOR SIXTH YEAR IN A ROW

URW has been awarded a top ‘A’ rating by the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP). For the sixth year in a row, the CDP has put URW on its A List, recognising our ambitious and transparent targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy. URW is one of only 152 European companies that achieved an ‘A’ rating out of over 21,000 companies scored. Last year, we announced a comprehensive evolution of our Better Places plan, setting science-based, SBTi-approved targets to reach net-zero on Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030 and on Scopes 1, 2 & 3 by 2050. Better Places also sets out ambitious commitments to increase our renewable electricity production in Europe to 50 MWp by 2030, up from 6.4 MWp in 2022, and strict targets on waste reduction, water conservation and biodiversity. Sylvain Montcouquiol, Chief Resources and Sustainability Officer at URW, commented: “We are delighted to be named in CDP’s A List for the sixth consecutive year, in recognition of the commitments and progress of URW’s industry-leading Better Places plan. Better Places continues our work to futureproof our portfolio, supports the sustainable evolution of the wider retail sector, and is creating new opportunities as we partner with cities in their environmental transition.”

URW EXPANDS CLEAN ENERGY PRODUCTION AT EUROPEAN CENTRES

URW’s Better Places sustainability plan commits the Group to being net zero across Scopes 1 & 2 by 2030 and across all scopes by 2050. On-site solar panel installations are key for us to secure, for the long-term, the procurement of renewable electricity, allowing us to reduce the carbon emissions from our energy consumption. In the past few months, we’ve made further strides to expand our clean electricity production, including: ✅ In the Czech Republic, we’ve installed 448 solar panels on the rooftop of Westfield Chodov, capable of producing around 186 MWh of renewable power each year – enough to power 62 Czech households. This is the first phase of a plan to cover more than 8,000 square metres of rooftop with PV panels at the centre. ✅ At Westfield City Süd in Austria, we unveiled plans for a new photovoltaic power station. The facility will harness the power of 1,300 solar panels to output 450 MWh of green power each year, supplementing the existing large-scale PV system on the shopping centre’s rooftop. ✅ In Germany, after commissioning a rooftop photovoltaic system at our Paunsdorf Center in Leipzig at the end of October, we began construction of another large-scale PV site at Ruhr Park in Bochum. When complete in April this year, its 3,600 solar modules will generate 1,434 MWh of clean electricity per year – powering 45 percent of Ruhr Park’s public areas. These are just a few of the ways we’re using our shopping centre assets as engines of renewable energy. For more about URW’s net-zero roadmap, as well as all our sustainability commitments and targets, discover our Better Places plan.
