Why hive?

Hive provides a distributed peer-to-peer cloud platform, federating and tapping into unused computer capacity in a network called hiveNet. At least 20% of computing resources remain unused on the periphery of Internet infrastructures, and in people's own computers. Hive uses the computing resources made available by users to offer data management and computing services in the cloud.


The cloud storage and computation market is today majority-owned (⅔) by a few players (Dropbox, GoogleDrive and OneDrive for storage, GoogleCloud, AWS and Azure for computation).


This cloud is highly centralized and relies on large data centers, housing a total of over 20 million servers. These have a growing carbon footprint. It is estimated that their annual electricity consumption already exceeds 400TWh, equivalent to that of Italy and Switzerland combined.


This concentration raises other issues, such as market foreclosure by dominant players, loss of sovereignty, lack of confidentiality and cost.


Hive is developing a distributed alternative that is more sustainable, secure, private and affordable.
