HSBC graduate schemes – your best start in finance

For graduates considering a career in finance, HSBC provides tailored training and support across multiple business areas for those from finance, STEM and other degree backgrounds. Let’s see what’s on offer.

What is HSBC?

HSBC is a British multinational bank and financial services company with headquarters in London and is the largest bank in Europe in terms of total assets. It operates in 62 countries and has nearly 40 million customers, from individuals to some of the world’s biggest companies and governments.

HSBC graduate schemes – what’s involved?

There are various graduate roles within four business areas at HSBC: commercial banking, global banking and markets, wealth and personal banking, and digital business services. In addition to programmes involving finance jobs, there are also graduate programmes for technology graduates and those interested in a non-financial/operational role. In 2022, 60% of HSBC graduates hired had a finance-related degree, 30% a STEM degree and 10% another non-finance degree. Regardless of your segment within the bank, you’ll be given responsibility early on and receive thorough ongoing training.

Will I be supported?

Graduates are assigned a buddy (a colleague to help you in your role) and a mentor (a senior manager to support your career development). There are also employee-led resource groups you can turn to for additional support in a variety of areas. To progress through your graduate role and beyond, you’ll have full access to the HSBC University programme, which has thousands of online courses and digital resources.

Why work at HSBC?

In addition to a competitive salary, HSBC employees get a range of benefits, including private healthcare, a pension scheme with generous employer contributions and volunteering opportunities. As for the working environment, HSBC believes in a meritocratic system that’s diverse, inclusive and prioritises employee wellbeing through, for example, a hybrid flexible working model and access to the Headspace mindfulness app.
